Explain this if you will.

If we announced we were trying for a baby, I assume this is what we would hear: Wow, great, congratulations, how exciting, excellent news.

But we are trying to find a dog, and this is what we hear: Oh dear, that's nice, but are you sure, do you know how much work it is, do you think you can manage, it's a big responsibility.

???

Perhaps they want you to have a baby instead ;-)

Maybe it's that people feel that they can give warnings about getting a dog since you can still back out of it, but with a baby, after a certain point of course, you can't back out of it and at that point warnings about additional work, lack of sleep etc. would just generate stress and anxiety (?)
